    Who is Barry Switzer? – Tulsa, Oklahoma

    Norman, Oklahoma — Legendary football coach Barry Switzer continues to be one of the most important figures in Oklahoma’s sports history.

    Born October 5, 1937 in Crossett, Arkansas, Switzer began his college football career as a linebacker at the University of Arkansas in 1955.

    After graduating, Switzer remained in college as an assistant coach before becoming an assistant to the Oklahoma Sooners in 1965.

    He finally got a chance as a head football coach at Norman in 1973. In his first three seasons he lost only one match, including three big eight championships and two national championships.

    In his 16 years as Head Coach of the Suners, Switzer has a record of 157–29–4 and has won 12 Big Eight Championships and 3 National Championships.

    He resigned as a coach in 1989.

    Switzer coached the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys in 1994 and won the Super Bowl two years later. He resigned in 1997, ending with a record of 40-24.

    Since then, he has been enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame and is currently involved in several local Oklahoma businesses.
