Westminster Kennel Club Postpones Dog Show Amid Covid-19 Soaring | Westminster Dog Show

Date:

The Westminster Kennel Club’s annual dog show has become the latest event to be postponed or canceled in New York due to the surge in coronavirus cases.

The club’s board of directors announced on Wednesday that it will postpone the 2022 event scheduled for late January by the end of the year. No new date was given.

“The health and safety of all participants in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is a top priority,” the group said in a statement. “Thanks to the community for their continued interest and support as we delay the show to a time when we can get together safely.”

The 144-year-old dog show attracts thousands of athletes from all over the United States and usually takes place in February, with semi-finals and final rounds at Madison Square Garden. Last year, it was moved to June and held outdoors at Lindhurst Estate on the outskirts of Tarrytown, north of New York City. Audiences were not allowed and human participants had to be vaccinated or newly tested.

The Pekingese, named Wasabi, won the show’s best by defeating Whippets, French Bulldogs, Old English Sheepdogs, German Shorthaired Pointers, Samoeds and West Highland White Terriers.

Covid-19 cases are currently exploding across the United States, with more than 8,500 dogs, owners, and owners gathering at the American Kennel Club National Championship in Orlando, Florida, the top dog show in the United States. It will be postponed less than two weeks after that.
