Portland, Oregon (KOIN) —A major scientific safety group in the western United States announced Saturday the approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 booster shots for all adults who have completed the vaccine series.
The Western State Scientific Safety Review Workgroup completed the review and stamped the approval after the CDC Panel issued the approval on Friday night. The FDA’s committee approved all adult boosters on Friday morning.
The workgroup confirmed the findings with Governor of Oregon, Governor of Washington, Governor of California, and Governor of Nevada on Saturday.
After approval, the Washington State Department of Health announced on Saturday afternoon that booster doses would be available to all adults in the state.
For those who received the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines at least 6 months ago, health officials recommended that:
- People over the age of 50, or those living in long-term care facilities, should take a booster shot after completing the vaccine series.
- All adults between the ages of 18 and 49 can receive boosters.
Health officials added that people vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson should receive booster immunization two months after vaccination.
Citing the ongoing risks that the virus poses to unvaccinated people, the group also expressed “strong support” for COVID-19 to vaccinate anyone over the age of five.
