Scotty Pippen Jr. scored 21 points and 4 steals to beat Vanderbilt to Hawaii 68-54 on Wednesday night in the first round of the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu.

Shane Desony added 10 points in a wire-to-wire victory for the Commodores (7-4) against BYU in Thursday’s semi-finals. The Cougars (10-2) defeated South Florida 54-39 in the first round contest.

Junior Noel Coleman scored 31 career best points in Hawaii (4-4) and six career best three points in two consecutive games.

Junior Madout added 10 for the Rainbow Warrior who was suffering from 21 turnovers.

Vanderbild connected at 43.9 percent of the shot, but from a range of 3 points to 22 5 (22.7 percent). The Commodores, who led 19 points, made 13 turns over.

Hawaii made 43.8 percent of that shot, which was 8 (32 percent) of 25 from the back of the arc. Coleman is 12 out of 19 from the field and includes 6 out of 10 from Deep.

The Rainbow Warriors will face South Florida (4-6) in a comfort match on Thursday.

The Rainbow Warriors made another charge, and Coleman’s layup cut the Commodores lead to 52-47, leaving 7:14.

However, Hawaii advanced for more than three and a half minutes without a field goal, and Vanderbild ran 13-2. Pippen’s stellar putback was 61-48 with 4:24 remaining, and Pippen completed the run with four free throws to 65-49 with 3:54 remaining.

Coleman scored in a layup 17 seconds later, ending the Rainbow Warriors drought.

Pippen scored 13 points in the first half, allowing Vanderbild to maintain a 35-24 lead on the break.

When the Commodores opened the 28-9 lead, Trey Thomas ejected two three-pointers during a 14-0 run. Pippen capped the burst with a basket of 6:36 remaining.

Coleman then erupted by earning all of Hawaii’s points during the 10-2 soar when the Rainbow Warriors moved within 11 with 3:54 remaining.

Coleman connected to the fifth tray in the half with 1:41 remaining to win 19 points in the first half.
