Vaccine makers will investigate new Covid variants to adapt shots as needed

Leading covid vaccine makers said they are investigating new, highly mutated Omicron coronavirus A variant that was first detected in South Africa and is working on vaccine indications as needed.

The World Health Organization, which named the new mutant Omicron, said the new strain is a “variant of concern” and may have a higher risk of reinfection compared to the previous mutation.

Pfizer and BioNTech said they are expecting more data on the new variant originally labeled B.1.1.529 within two weeks. Both companies are expected to be able to redesign their shots for the new variant within 6 weeks and ship their first batch within 100 days.

Moderna Inc. said it is working to advance booster candidates for the new variant. The company is also testing high doses of existing boosters and researching other booster candidates designed to protect against multiple variants.

Johnson and Johnson are also closely monitoring the new strain of COVID-19 and testing the effectiveness of the shot against new variants emerging in South Africa.

AstraZeneca said it is investigating the subspecies and has already investigated the location where the subspecies was identified.

Fearing new variants with about 50 mutations, several other countries around the world, including the European Union and the United States and the United Kingdom, have suspended flights from South Africa and neighboring countries.
