While most commercially available oil-absorbent materials are synthetic, this mat is made from natural materials that are biodegradable and safe for marine life. This product is ready to distribute and is available in a percent cotton or 90 percent cotton formulation. Reusable and environmentally safe.

“Microplastics are harmful to marine life, so using synthetic materials to treat oil spills ultimately exacerbates the problem of marine pollution,” said Ramkumar. “Cotton-based products are more sustainable and do not pollute the ocean with microplastics.”

Ramkmal and his team were inspired to study oil absorption technology after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill caused about 5 million barrels of oil to spill into the Gulf of Mexico. Currently, Texas Tech research has the potential to have significant environmental impact in the aftermath of California’s catastrophic oil spill.
