Dr. James Samuel Pope, an intensivist at Hartford Hospital, Connecticut, USA, is exhausted and overwhelmed by the influx of almost unvaccinated COVID patients, hoping that the pandemic Omicron wave will be the last. ..

“The last two weeks have been a very archetypal era,” says the Pope, ICU’s medical director at Hartford Hospital. “There were more ER visits in one day than ever before.”

Most of the patients the Pope sees today are unvaccinated and many of them are intubated or attached to an ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) system to help them breathe. increase.

The Pope knows that not all the patients he cares for go home.

“Frustration is very real,” said the Pope, who patrols with the medical team to examine cases of each patient between the ages of 22 and 80.

“All of us are on fire,” the Pope specifically told AFP. Health care workers People who have been caring for coronavirus patients since the pandemic began.

“It’s hard to find someone who is fine and feels this is a positive life-changing experience,” he says, but admits that there was a moment of inspiration.

Another healthcare worker approaches the Pope and asks him to sign the patient’s death certificate. There was an empty bed in the ward, and a COVID-19 patient died at night.

The Pope remembers the other patient he lost. He says they are so sedated that most are unaware that they are dying.

“There were many young people who died because we worked hard to save them, but we just couldn’t save them,” he says.

“I don’t want to make value judgments in people’s lives, but when at least 90 years old die, they can feel alive.”

“But I’m not the youngest person (age) I took care of, 25 or 18 years old,” says the Pope.

Doctors say their symptoms have improved over the last two years, but they still lament the pandemic.

He says the ICU bed hasn’t been empty for some time, and the hospital’s ER has recently overrun as Omicron variants have wiped out the country.

He says he’s not sure he wants to continue this work unless something changes.

“I won’t continue this. It’s a drain,” he says.

“I hope this is it. I hope this is the last big surge.”
