US authorities have reopened a border crossing in southern Texas, which had been closed for more than a week. Del Rio’s port of entry was closed after thousands of migrants set up camps under the intersection of the International Bridge.

The Del Rio crossroads were closed from 17 September as thousands of immigrants, mostly Haitians, crossed the Rio Grande River from Mexico and began to set up temporary camps under the International Bridge.
During the closure, traffic to the Del Rio intersection on the US side of the border was rerouted to the Eagle Pass, about 60 miles away.
Barberde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez said last year was in a difficult situation in the region and the border crisis was the latest in a series of tensions on local officials.
“This year we’ve dealt with winter storms, we’ve dealt with pandemics, we’ve dealt with this immigration crisis. I’ve dealt with jailbreaks — all in a short period of time,” Martinez told NPR.
On the Mexican side of the border, many companies were struggling due to the closure of the Del Rio intersection. Auto mechanic Eduardo Hernandez told NPR that he had lost about 50% of his business in the last two weeks.
“The situation has been strange since immigrants came here,” said Hernandez, who relied on Texas drivers coming to him for cheaper labor.
After thousands of migrants gathered under the Del Rio Bridge, the Biden administration promoted deportation flights to Haiti and elsewhere. By Friday, the last immigrants had been taken away by US authorities.
