Two shots of Pfizer’s COVID vaccine provide about 70% protection against serious illness caused by Omicron, according to the results of a study published Tuesday in South Africa.

The emergence of highly mutated mutants first detected in South Africa last month raised concerns that it could cause serious illness, increase infectivity, and avoid vaccines. ..

Early indicators suggest that it may be more contagious, but promising data to date suggest that the vaccine still provides protection against Omicron.

The latest study from South Africa suggests that two doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine still provide protection against serious illness.

“Two doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine have shown 70% effectiveness in reducing the risk of hospitalization,” said Discovery, the leading South African private health insurance company that co-led the study. Ryan Noachi, who is a person, says.

2 doses vaccination According to both companies, they provided 93% protection against previous variants.

This study is based on the results of 78,000 PCR tests conducted in South Africa between November 15th and December 7th and was conducted by Discovery in collaboration with the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC).

“We are very encouraged by the results,” said Glenda Gray, head of SAMRC.

However, Noahha warned that despite the protection of the two doses, Omicron’s rapid spread in South Africa could lead to a runaway hospital.

Last week, South Africa approved booster shots for all citizens over the age of 18 as they tried to stop the rise of new infections.

So far, more than 17 million people in South Africa, or about one-third of the country’s population, have been vaccinated.

The government initially wanted to vaccinate about 70% of the population by the end of the year, but moved that goal to March 2022.

Pfizer / BioNTech previously said it seemed to be effective against severe illness, but two shots may not be enough to prevent the capture of Omicron.

In a preliminary study released last week, the two companies said a third shot appeared to be effective against the strain.
