Toyota Camry recalls due to braking problems

A failed vacuum pump could cause certain Toyota cam sedans to lose braking power and increase the risk of a collision, NHTSA said Monday. Toyota will recall the 227,490 Camry from 2018-2019 model year to solve the problem.

Vacuum pump vane caps can deteriorate prematurely in vehicles with frequent braking and prolonged idling. If the piece is damaged, the brake booster will not be able to obtain the required power and the power brake assist function will not work. The brake pedal may become stiff and it may be difficult to stop the vehicle. The driver may need to apply more braking pressure to the pedals, and a sudden loss of power brake assist may alert the driver and increase the risk of a crash.

The brakes will continue to work, but there is no expected pressure. In addition to requiring more braking force, the driver may notice auditory and visual warnings within the instrument cluster.

The hybrid version does not use a vacuum pump and has not been recalled. Other Toyota and Lexus vehicles use different pump designs or different materials for vane caps. Toyota has reported 14 cases related to this issue and suspects that 61 warranty claims have been filed for braking issues.

The owner will be notified of the recall fix as early as December 16th and the Toyota dealer will repair or replace the defective pump free of charge. If the owner has already completed the work, you can apply for a refund. Toyota’s recall identification code is 21TB09 / 21TA09, and the owner can access the following site.
