Nashville, Tennessee (WTVF) — Parliamentarians have begun discussing ways to renew Tennessee’s formula to fund public schools, but are now invited to attend.

The Basic Education Program (BEP) is the current formula for how to allocate funds to schools. It has been in the book since 1992.

Despite minor changes in the past, Governor Bill Lee wants to completely revamp the formula.

Currently, eight public “city halls” are on the calendar to discuss strategies, all livestreamed. According to the Ministry of Education, city halls in these areas were created to stimulate local conversations in new ways to provide the best service to Tennessee students.

“With state-wide partners and stakeholders, I’m excited to invite all Tennessees to participate in these conversations about what a student-based financing strategy looks like in our state. We do, “said Commissioner Penny Schwin. “Our collective goal is to focus on how to optimize students for their needs and success, and their parents, interests in their thoughts, concerns and hopes for new public education. We look forward to hearing from you and the general public. Financing strategies to best support our children. “

Tennessees are encouraged to email comments and questions discussed at the city hall. tnedu.funding@tn.gov..
