Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — On December 7, 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared it a “notorious day” after the attack on Pearl Harbor. And today, 80 years later, the lives lost in the harbor are paid homage to the annual memorial at the University of Arizona.

The commemorative ceremony begins at 7:15 am at the USS Arizona Mall Memorial on the university campus. There is a reception hosted by ROTC and followed by the Students’ Union.

There will be a speech and a bell ringing ceremony that tells the names of the eight Arizonas who died in Pearl Harbor. Last year, the ceremony was pre-recorded and broadcast online.

Andrew Desautel, one of the speakers, said there were only two survivors of Pearl Harbor. The numbers have slowly declined over the last few decades, and Desautel said it was an honor to meet these brave men.

“Every year, when I was a kid, I met a hero I read in books and watched on TV,” he said. “And suddenly I became like an extended family to me.”

From listening to veteran happy memories to listening to difficult stories, he said he recognized the importance of this moment in history.

“It’s easy to forget the guys in Pearl and the guys in Arizona,” he said. “For them, it was only the first day. That was a bad thing, but that afternoon we were in a state of war and the men were shipping. Some of the slightly injured men said, I was already heading to the war zone for defense. “
