Deputy Sheriff Jim Wells County has arrested three people accused of murder earlier this month.
Booked in Jim Wells County prison on Monday were Matthew Ortiz (17) from Orange Grove, Justin Benavides (18), and Crystal Ivanes (37) from Alice. All three were arrested on suspicion of engaging in criminal organization activities and exacerbating assault with deadly weapons.
They have been accused of a deadly shooting on County Road 239 on North Highway 281 on Sunday, December 5.
Sheriff Daniel Bueno said, “The three detained with the dead wore ski masks and headed from North Highway 281 to County Highway 239, armed when the ammunition was fired and began fighting.” Stated.
Bueno said that when the agents arrived at the scene, they found a man who died in the ditch and a witness who said a gun had been fired.
Bueno identified Leroy Ortiz of Orange Grove as finding the man dead.
“Evidence and samples of crime scenes will be submitted to the district attorney,” said Lieutenant Alan Gonzalez. “The fate of these individuals is presented to the grand jury.”
“The case is still active and is considered an ongoing investigation,” Gonzales added.
As of the end of Monday, no bonds were set.
