Sweden’s Sara Hector leads Mikaela Shiffrin to victory for the first time in seven years | Mikaela Shiffrin

Date:

Swedish skier Sara Hector takes the lead and beat for the first run Mikaela Shiffrin Wednesday at the Women’s World Cup Giant Slalom in Courchevel.

This was Hector’s second career win and his first win in almost seven years.

Hector took second place on Schifflin in another GS on the same hill, then won the podium in 0.35 seconds a day for the first time in a year.

“Wow, it’s incredible and I’m very surprised,” Hector said. “It was a very big fight, and I thought I wasn’t that fast. I feel so great. It’s crazy. I’m proud.”

World Cup Giant Slalom Champion Marta Bassino was six-tenths behind in third place as he failed to score points in the first two GS races of the season. France’s Tessa Worley, who was second after the opening run, fell to fourth and defended overall champion Petra Vlhov in fifth.

Sofia Goggia, Schifflin’s main challenger in the overall ranking, failed to score World Cup points for the second consecutive day. The American is now leading her with 115 points.

Gogja slipped off the track after turning left in the middle of the opening run and losing balance. The Italians skied on the second leg of the race on Tuesday.

2020 overall champion Federica Brignone was also unable to finish her second run.

Paula Moltzan of the United States just flipped in 28th place from the opening run and finished in 13th place after scoring 15 spots in a powerful second run.

World Champion Lara Gut-Behrami and Slalom World Cup winners Catalina Linsberger and Alice Robinson attended the event following a positive Covid-19 test.

The race replaced GS, which was canceled in November in Killington, Vermont due to strong winds.

The Women’s World Cup will continue slalom with another GS next week in Lienz, Austria.
