A surfer was at the wrong end of a shark attack Californiawho sustained ‘major injuries to his stomach and leg’ on Wednesday morning.

The man, who is initially unknown, was bitten on Lovers Point Beach in Monterrey Bay, California, which is a half-hour drive south of San Francisco.

He was immediately taken to Natividad Medical Center – the nearest hospital to the beach, even though it is 23 miles from the coast. The attack took place around 11 p.m.

It remains unclear whether the man was attacked while doing some sort of water activity or if the shark was attacked while he was just swimming.

Jenny McAdams – a councilor for the city of Pacific Grove shared a statement on Facebook: ‘The condition of the surfer is currently unknown. After the attack, the shark was seen in the area again. ‘

‘The beach is closed, with everyone ordering out of the water. I will share updates as they become available, ‘she added.

The beaches in the area will be closed for the next 48 hours, the Monterey Herald reports.

Rhonda Navarrol, who witnessed the attack, told CBS branch KION-TV that the shark was visible from above the water but that they did not recognize what type it was.

A press release will take place later today as more updates are expected.

As of June 22, there have been 10 shark attacks in the U.S. this year, according to Sharks follow.

Almost all of them occurred in Florida, except one, which took place in California.

None of them were considered provocative and no deaths have been reported in relation to the amount of shark attacks this year.

If a person encounters a shark in the water, they are advised to stay and keep quiet and not to swim from it.

If the shark wants to launch an attack, it is advisable to hit it in the nose as hard as possible because of its sensitivity. In most cases, it will drive away the shark.

If the shark is just spinning around someone without immediate threat, then it is advisable to just stand still and observe until he swims away.
