Subaru Soltera’s global debut precedes the US announcement

This year’s Los Angeles Auto Show is where Subaru will showcase its new all-electric Soltera on this side of the pond, but the new EV, co-developed with Toyota, officially appeared at a public event in Japan. The machines shown here are very similar to the ones coming out in Los Angeles next week, except that there is a steering wheel on the other side of the cabin.

It’s also very similar to Toyota’s cousin. It’s a lot more similar than some industry observers expected.

As an entry into the growing all-electric compact crossover market, Subaru Soltera and Toyota bZ4X are the product of a joint partnership between the two Japanese giants, making the 86 / BRZ more than just a one-off collaboration. increase. These two machines share a lot in terms of styling, and while some body similarity is expected as a logical part of such a collaborative project, the entire central part of these two rigs ( Ends as the same unit (all with oversized body cladding).

Speaking of cladding, does anyone have a black / body-colored door on the charging port that makes others uncomfortable? It’s not a half, but an extension of the jumbo wheel arch molding. If you have a long memory, you will remember that one of the last Subarus to address this Subaru conundrum, Baja, chose to simply dip the clad through the fuel door of the rear fender on the passenger side. .. This solution breaks my brain.

    Subaru Soltera-

Anyway, Solterra’s documentation on the Japanese market reveals that both two-wheel and all-wheel drive variations are available in the country, the latter being about 200 pounds heavier than the 4,246-pound rear driver. The cruising range on a full charge is stated to be 330 miles for the two-wheel drive model and approximately 290 miles for the all-wheel drive model. Please note that these numbers are subject to change in our market due to differences in testing procedures.

Power checks in at 201 horses (150kW) or 214 ponies (160kW), depending on the number of driving wheels. Again, these are Japanese specifications that are subject to change in the United States. It’s strange that a single motor cranks out 150kW, while each dual motor option is rated at 80kW. Given Subaru’s tendency to promote all-wheel drive capability (with the exception of the BRZ, of course), it is not zero that only dual motor variants will be offered on our shores. Of course, anything is possible as long as the company is chasing a particular price range.

The battery capacity of both models exceeds 71kWh, explaining that the extra weight of the dual motors is relatively under-range compared to the single motor car. It’s not yet known if 14 horses are enough to make up for the extra £ 200. If you have any doubts about the footprint this car throws, know that it’s 8.9 inches longer and 2.4 inches wider than the Crosstrek, but only slightly higher.

Subaru has promised to showcase the new All-Electric Solterra North American version at a car show in Los Angeles next week. If it falls, keep an eye on the news.
