New York-Southwest Airlines canceled hundreds of flights over the weekend, blaming air traffic control issues and weather issues.

According to flight tracker FlightAware, the airline canceled more than 1,000 flights, or 28% of the schedule, as of 5 pm on Sunday. This was by far the highest rate among the major US airlines. According to the flight tracker, next were Allegiant and Spirit, who canceled 5% and 4% of their flights on Sunday, respectively. American Airlines has canceled 2% of its flights.

Southwest Airlines said in an email statement that it had experienced weather problems at a Florida airport early in the weekend. This was exacerbated by unexpected air traffic control issues in the same area. These issues caused delays and prompted significant airline cancellations from Friday night.

“Throughout the weekend, we have continued to work diligently to reset operations, with a focus on relocating aircraft and crew to take care of our customers,” Southwest Airlines said. “The current schedule is less frequent between cities, making recovery more difficult and protracted in the event of operational challenges.”

According to the company, customers can consider self-service rebooking options on Southwest.com to stay up-to-date on travel status.

However, Henry H, president and travel industry analyst at The Atmosphere Research Group, based in San Francisco. Harteveldt points out other causes of cancellation.

First, Southwest Airlines plans more flights than it can handle, a problem that began in June, he says. He also noted that Southwest Airlines operates what is called a point-to-point route network, which “cascades” along the remaining flight segments in the event of delays. This is because, for example, flights departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Dallas, home of Southwest Airlines, may stop multiple times along the way.

But according to Harteveldt, the most annoying reason is that pilots who oppose Southwest’s decision to mandate COVID-19 vaccination are illicitly working to call for illness or engage in a “slowdown of work.” It is possible that you are participating.

In a statement on Saturday, the Southwest Airlines Pilot Association, an airline pilot union, said it wasn’t.

“SWAPA is aware of the operational issues affecting Southwest Airlines today due to many issues, but is confident that pilots are not participating in formal or informal work actions. I can say. “

Harteveldt pointed out that Southwest’s predicament could be long-lasting and impact its fourth-quarter financial performance.

“This is all happening while people are booking Thanksgiving and Christmas / New Year holidays,” he said. “It’s very likely that some people who would normally book on Southwest Airlines will see this news and choose to use another airline.”
