Southern California enacts new smog rules on refineries

Diamond Bar, California (AP) — Southern California aviation regulators have approved new restrictions on oil refineries in areas where large amounts of smog-forming pollutants can be removed from the atmosphere.

On Friday, the South Coast Air Quality Control District Board adopted a rule change requiring restrictions on nitrogen oxide emissions.

These are the gases produced by the combustion that causes ozone smog. According to AQMD, the new regulations could reduce these gases by about 8 tonnes a day over the next 14 years.

California has some of the country’s dirtiest air, with the worst air quality near low-income, minority neighborhood refineries.
