Breeze said dehydration can cause dizziness and ultimately death.

“Our message to the hiking community should take into account not only geography but also aquifers,” he said.

Sheriff Mariposa County has worked with toxicologists, environmental experts, the FBI and other experts.

They had already ruled out guns and other weapons, extreme heat, lightning strikes, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, exposure to cyanide, illicit drugs, alcohol, or causes related to suicide.

“There was no obvious cause of death,” Breeze said when the family was found.

He said there are known mines in the area and police are concerned about potential environmental hazards.

An outbreak of toxic algae was found about 12 miles downstream from where Gerish and his family were found dead, and the Land Management Department generally visited hiking trails and campgrounds along the Merced River earlier this month. I urged you to close it.

Authorities closed 28 miles of the waterway between the towns of Brysburg and Bagby after water samples from the river were tested positive for toxic algae.

Breeze said Thursday that he used six separate laboratories to test the water.

“Water has been confirmed to be positive for anatoxin A,” Briese said.

Anatoxin A is a naturally occurring toxin, also known as the Very Fast Death Factor (VFDF).

“There was no evidence that the family had ingested the toxin,” he said.

The Sierra National Forest in California has closed more than 12 trails, campgrounds and picnic areas because of “unknown danger”.

Police said there were few criminal clues on the scene and no signs of trauma or other misconduct.
