(NEXSTAR) – Singapore’s Minister of Health advises those who have taken Pfizer twice to consider mixing it this time.
People who get Pfizer on the first two doses and then take Moderna booster shots are 72% less likely to get infected. According to COVID-19At a press conference on Monday, Health Minister Onyekung said. People who have been vaccinated three times with the Pfizer vaccine are 62% less likely to get infected, Yahoo News reports.
“Both mRNA vaccines work very well as boosters, and Pfizer-Pfizer-Moderna has a slight advantage,” he said. “Anyway, the impact on reducing the severity of the disease is very high with the combination of both.”
The Minister of Health said he was also considering the effectiveness of Moderna-Moderna-Pfizer, but the sample sizes investigated so far were still too small to draw meaningful conclusions.
In the United States, it is currently permitted to mix and match vaccine doses. Especially recommended for those who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on their first vaccination.
Last month, when the new Booster Shot Mix and Match Rule was announced, I asked Dr. Bob Wahater, Director of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, what to do if he was a J & J recipient. Would you like to get another J & J dose or another type?
“No doubt, we’ll get the mRNA,” Wachter said, giving Moderna a slight advantage over Pfizer when given the choice.
Wachter said there was little evidence at the time to support the mixing and matching of Pfizer and Moderna. “There is weak evidence that the use of other mRNAs can result in slightly stronger reactions,” he said.
One scenario where Wachter strongly recommends mixing and matching is when it first affects Pfizer or Moderna, in addition to its routine side effects. In that case, you may want to talk to your doctor about getting another type of vaccine for your booster.
