Sierra Leone explosion: At least 98 killed after oil tanker collides with truck, crowd gathers to collect leaking fuel – Fresno, California

    Fresno, California 2021-11-06 15:06:27 –

Freetown, Sierra Leone-At least 98 people were killed and dozens were seriously injured after an oil tanker truck exploded near the capital of Sierra Leone and crowded to collect leaked fuel. Officials and witnesses said on Saturday.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency, the explosion occurred late Friday when a tanker collided with another truck while pulling a tanker to a gas station near a busy intersection in Wellington, just east of Freetown’s capital.

“Both drivers have warned locals to leave the scene while they are coming out of the car and trying to deal with the leaks that result from the collision,” officials said.

But in this very poor country, witnesses said the crowd was still in a hurry to scoop up fuel. The cause of the leaked fuel ignited was not immediately known, but an immediate explosion occurred.

A video obtained by the Associated Press showed that a huge fireball was burning in the night sky as some of the severely burned survivors shouted in pain. The burnt debris of the victims was scattered around the scene, waiting to be transported to the morgue.

Nearly 100 injured were taken to a local hospital, officials said. According to Foday Musa, an intensive care unit staff member, about 30 people who suffered severe burns at Connaught Hospital were not expected to survive.

The injured, whose clothes were burned down in the fire after the explosion, lay naked on the stretcher because a nurse was on the stretcher on Saturday. Hundreds of people milled outside the main gate of the morgue near the front door of the hospital, waiting for the words of their loved ones.

Hospital staff called in as many doctors and nurses as possible overnight to take care of the injured. The country’s medical sector is still recovering from the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic, which killed many doctors and nurses in West African countries.

President Julius Mada Bio, who was in Scotland at the United Nations Climate Change Conference on Saturday, lamented “a terrible loss of life.”

“Deep sympathy for the family who lost their loved ones and the resulting injuries,” he tweeted.

Vice President Mohammed Jurde Jaro visited two hospitals overnight and said that the National Disaster Management Bureau of Sierra Leone and others would “work tirelessly” in the wake of an emergency.

“We are all deeply saddened by the tragedy of this country, and it is certainly a difficult time for our country,” he said on his Facebook page.
