    “Severe” fire destroys Taiwanese apartment, killing nearly 50 people

    Taipei, taiwan —Thursday officials said the death toll from a fire that swallowed a building overnight in southern Taiwan increased to another 46, injuring at least 41 more. The 13-story building ignited around 3 am on Thursday, according to Kaohsiung fire officials.

    According to a statement from the fire department, the fire was “very intense” and many floors were destroyed.

    According to officials, 32 bodies were sent directly from the scene of the flame to the morgue. Another 14 who showed no signs of life were of the 55 who were taken to the hospital. In Taiwan, formal confirmation of death can only be done at the hospital.

    Another search for the building was planned before sunset, officials said.

    A video broadcast on Taiwanese television showed orange flames and smoke swirling from the lower floors of the building as firefighters sprayed water from the streets. An unidentified woman said she had parents between the ages of 60 and 70.

    After dawn, I could see firefighters spraying water on the middle floors of the building, which was still smoldering from the hills.

    According to a statement from the fire department, the cause of the fire was unknown, but firefighters said the flames burned most violently in many cluttered areas.
