Madison, Wisconsin — The Republican Party confirmed on Tuesday after stagnating four of Democratic Tony Evers cabinet appointments for several months to give the governor control over wildlife and pollution policies. I didn’t do anything about the important choices.
The Senate voted overwhelmingly, approving Craig Thompson and Randy Romanski as transport and agriculture secretaries. Missy Hughes as secretary of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation. Dawn Klim as Secretary of the Safety and Professional Services Department. The Senate also has other commitments to various boards, committees, and committees, including Daniel Carlton Jr. as administrator of the Wisconsin Institutional Review Board and Joaquin Altoro as Secretary-General of the Wisconsin Home Economic Development Authority. Confirmed the appointment of 30 people.
“I know they were really busy,” Evers said of the Senate when asked about a pending confirmation vote at a press conference. “But there are extraordinary leaders waiting to be approved. Many people have already joined several committees and advised on a variety of really important issues. Soon.”
No Sandra Nurse was chosen by Evers to replace Fred Plane, chairman of the Natural Resources Commission, on Tuesday’s Dockett. His term expired in May and Evers was urged to appoint Nace to fill his slot. This move will give Evers appointees control of the majority of the body that regulates hunting, pollution and other environmental policies.
However, Plain, then appointed by Republican Governor Scott Walker, refused to resign. He points out the 1964 State Supreme Court ruling that the governor’s appointees do not have to leave their posts until their replacement is confirmed.
Prehn was forced to cancel the September meeting of the board after the Natural Resources Department officials said there was nothing to discuss. Plain accused the department of not wanting to work with him. Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul filed a proceeding seeking a court order to deport Plen from the board, but a judge in Dane County dismissed it, citing the Supreme Court’s case.
“This can happen in a rational way. Somehow it became irrational,” Evers said of replacing the plane. “We want to resolve it soon. Either he leaves the board or has the Senate approve Sandy Nurse as the next person on the board. It slows down the process. And make us look like a fool as a state. There is no reason we look stupid. We have good people who want to work. “
The battle for nurse confirmation shows how confirmation votes have transformed into another party’s battlefield after the Senate proforma exercises since Evers defeated Walker in 2018. ..
Republican leaders have delayed voting for some of Evers’ top nominees by months, allowing them to serve, but remain vulnerable to dismissal. The Senate voted against approving Brad Fuff as Secretary of Agriculture in 2019, making Evers very angry, and he accused the move of being “political BS” and “moral and stupid.” Pfaff won the Senate seat as a Democrat in the 2020 elections.
Republicans are wary of Thompson, saying he is working as a lobbyist on traffic issues and is concerned that he is advocating a tax increase for road construction. They also announced reservations for Crim, who was charged with child abuse in 2005 after she tapped her five-year-old son’s hand with a pen. The proceeding was finally dismissed after Crim successfully completed the terms of the postponed indictment.
The Senate unanimously approved all appointees except Thompson and Klim. Thompson was confirmed by a 27-4 vote, with Republicans Julian Bradley, Chris Capenga, Stevenas and Duest Label voting against it. Klim was confirmed in a 29-2 vote against Bradley and Nath. There was no discussion about the appointed person.
After the vote, Democratic Senator Chris Larson said about 100 appointees still needed confirmation.
“I have a fully functional government here and hope to proceed with other appointments as soon as possible,” he said.
The Republican Party did not respond.
