From Friday to Sunday, about 8,300 flights have landed, with tens of thousands delayed. This is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, and several airlines have admitted that the surge in Omicron is causing staff shortages.

According to flight tracker FlightAware, the impact was spread around the world, with more than 1,100 flights already facing cancellation on Monday and nearly 300 more expected to be canceled on Tuesday.

In Xi’An, China, 13 million residents were trapped in their homes on Sunday as restrictions became stricter. This is because China recorded the highest number of COVID-19 infections in 21 months.

Desperate to prevent an outbreak before the February Beijing Winter Olympics, China has implemented a vigilant “zero COVID” strategy, including strict border restrictions, long-term quarantine, and targeted blockades. However, there was a sporadic relapse.

Governments around the world are also struggling to boost testing and vaccination.

In the United States, Pandemic’s top adviser Anthony Fauci warned of COVID’s “testing problems” and vowed to make more tests available next month as the virus overwhelms the country.

“There are still some issues with people struggling to take the test,” Fauci told ABC News on Sunday.

“But we’re working on a test issue,” he added, adding that it should be fixed “immediately.”

However, air travel was still a major headache in the world.

Crew members and ground staff became ill and went into quarantine after being infected with COVID, according to several airlines.

Lufthansa, Delta, United Airlines, British Airways, Alaska Airlines and several others have been forced to cancel their flights.

JetBlue said it entered the holiday season with “the best staffing since the pandemic began.”

However, “despite our best efforts, we have to cancel many flights and additional Flight As Omicron’s community grows further, there remains the potential for cancellations and other delays. “

    Frustration

According to tracker data, Chinese aircraft carriers, especially China Eastern Airlines and Air China, scrubbed thousands of flights over long weekends, including many flights to and from Xi’an Xianyang International Airport.

Flightaware.com reported that approximately 2,900 flights worldwide were canceled on Saturday and 3,100 were canceled on Sunday, of which more than 1,300 took off or landed at US airports. Over 14,000 flights on Sunday are delayed.

Cancellations have become frustrating for many who are eager to reunite with their families during the holidays after a significant reduction in Christmas last year.

The AAA Automobile Association estimates that more than 109 million Americans will travel by plane, train, or car between December 23 and January 2, an increase of 34 percent over last year.

However, most of these plans were created before Omicron, which became the dominant strain in the United States and overwhelmed hospitals and healthcare professionals, was detected.
