Nashville, Tennessee (WTVF) — In such sacred places, it can be dark and quiet. This means that, except this weekend, the last resting place for 35,000 Middle Tennessee veterans will be back.

“Try to center it as much as possible,” says Ezra Lashley, Donelson’s Eagle Scout. “Yes, it’s like that.”

Hundreds of Middle Tennessee Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts line up and place the American flag on each marker.

“I was doing this … oh … I think I was about 6 years old. I’m 17 years old now,” Lashley said.

Lashley says he enjoys showing young scouts how it is done.

“I’ll show you how to pay respect to them, how to pay their respect,” he said.

Boy Scout Corps 777 on Mount Juliet accompanied Lashley with the flag on the oldest part of the Nashville National Cemetery. Some of the ruins date back to the civil war. That is, many markers have no name. But they wouldn’t go without a flag.

“We praise them because they served our country and made many sacrifices, even if they were just placeholders,” said 11-year-old Rhett Thomas, a Troop 777 boy scout. rice field.

Such a huge task can be daunting.

“I thought it was like so many tombstones,” said Thomas.

But in just a few minutes, the green and white fields were filled with red, white, and blue.

“Looking at this, it’s probably half done,” Lashley said. “It’s a lot shorter than I expected.”

Exercise is designed to go beyond a stunning display of patriotism.

“In our culture, we sometimes think of it as just another holiday, a day away from work and things,” Lashley said.

For Lashley, it is reminiscent of all the heroes sleeping in this sacred place.

“I really enjoyed coming out and giving people the time to pay homage to those who deserve it,” he said.

Flagging the Nashville National Cemetery was just one of more than 30 events planned throughout our region by scouts in central Tennessee.
