Scott County changed forever after Toyota arrived – Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky

Georgetown, Kentucky (LEX 18) — Ford New factory Hardin County evokes memories of another deal with a car maker that led to the transformation of central Kentucky.

When Toyota chose Kentucky as its first US factory, it was something unheard of in the state.

Such companies choose small towns and spend billions of dollars on our economy. It is still seen as Kentucky’s biggest “get”.

At one point, the community motto was “a place where heritage and progress meet.”

Progress has come with Toyota. The population has more than tripled in the last three decades, and dozens of new businesses have sprung up. The heritage is on the main street.

In 1985, Kimberly Hay worked at Farmers Bank on Main Street.

It was also the largest trading place in the county’s history among the Gobs at the time. Martha Layne Collins and Toyota.

“They signed in our bank when we were Farmers Bank. They signed in our boardroom,” Hay said. “And I knew things would change. I didn’t know how much it would change, but the changes were positive.”

Its growth included the current owner of Fava’s Restaurant.

“I was hired in January 1994, where I started body welding,” said John Gurucho, who retired from Toyota a few years ago.

“There weren’t many companies here (at that time) on the main street,” Hay said.

“There was no bypass. Wal-Mart was three places ahead of its current location,” said Gruchow.

The main street building is the same even if the interior is changed.

Jack Connor of Scott County United has helped Georgetown take advantage of the millions of dollars and thousands of workers Toyota has brought to the region.

The economy continues to diversify, but Connor says the town is still built on relationships, and its heartbeat and heritage remains.

“This town hasn’t changed. It’s the same main street as usual. It’s very important and very important,” Connor said.

A single deal changed Georgetown. Connor predicts the same future in Hardin County.
