School shooting survivors speak out after a Texas shooting – Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky

Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky 2022-05-25 23:49:45 –

(LEX 18) — Twenty-five years after a Paducah woman survived one of Kentucky’s deadliest school shootouts, she says the problem hasn’t improved yet.

“I think it’s important for us to have a resource officer in the school. If there was a way for the mentor and mentee to build a relationship, my shooter would feel like he had no one to talk to, even if he wasn’t at home. “Missy Jenkins Smith said.

“It’s really painful to see this is something we’re still fighting 25 years after I happened,” said Murray resident Smith.

On December 1, 1997, a fellow student fired at her prayer group at Heath High School.

“I was in 10th grade. Every morning I attended a prayer circle with my other classmates and twin sisters. I remember hearing the first gunshot with just a few steps. . “

Smith lost the use of his three classmates and her legs that day.

“It bounced back in me, missing all major organs except my lungs and hitting my spinal cord,” Smith said.

14-year-old Michael Carneil was arrested and Smith spent five months in the hospital.

Smith was tied up in a wheelchair, returned to school, stayed in the hospital for five months, and after graduating, began his mission to develop pain.

She published the award-winning book “I Choose to Be Happy” and shared her story at a school in Kentucky.

But the shooting at Rob Elementary in Texas on Tuesday is a bitter reminder of the impact of gun violence on the country, she said.

“I was very angry to find this happening to small children, many of their elementary school students,” Smith said.

This means the 27th shooting of school property in the United States in 2022. Smith said he was calling on the school to be more active.
