San Jose State University recorded an aggressive touchdown in the second half, but defeated Hawaii 17-13 in the opening round of the Mountain West Conference at the Clarence TC Chin Athletic Complex tonight.
In the low-scoring game, the two teams played the first ever FBS game without a single punt, and only two years later, they combined 22 punts.
San Jose led 14-13, with Spartan winning the ball at the UH27 yardline with the remaining forced fumble and recovery of Rico Trefree at 4:32.

Sparta moved the clock to Matt Mercurio’s 26-yard field goal, with 1:19 remaining to score the final point.
Hawaii finally got the ball again, and quarterback Chevan Cordero scrambled 12 yards in 4th and 1st, then drove the ball to SJSU21 with seconds remaining.
Cordero’s last pass came out from behind the end zone and was incomplete.
