The Bangladesh Clothing Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has requested the Bangladesh Textile Factory Corporation (BTMC) to revive a state-owned textile factory through a public-private partnership (PPP). According to BGMEA, the reopening of the closed factory will enable it to meet the growing demand for local yarns and fabrics in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry.

This discussion took place recently when BTMC Chairman Brigadier General Md Zakir Hossain paid a courtesy call on BGMEA President Faruque Hassan to discuss a variety of issues related to the apparel and textile industry.

Hassan said there is a growing demand for local textiles and yarns in Bangladesh’s RMG industry. In addition, the RMG sector is increasingly focusing on garments made from non-cotton fibers that can be sourced from local textile factories, BGMEA said in a press note.

Moreover, revitalizing a failed factory will create more employment opportunities in the country, Hassan said.
