Spartanberg, South Carolina (WSPA) – Each year, as the weather gets colder, the number of home fires increases.
The Red Cross is helping many families fire, including Woodruff’s family on Thursday night.
“It was scary, I’m not going to lie, it was very scary,” says homeowner April Razzok.
Razzok’s house in April on Jamie’s Creek Drive caught fire late Thursday night. She says they were all okay, thanks to her son’s warning.
“It’s a great feeling for us all to go out and my dog to go out,” says Razzouk.
She says the greatest damage happened in the kitchen.
“They had to replace this wall here, they had to replace the cabinet above the ceiling, stove,” she said.
Razzouk says she can still taste the smoke.
“Oh yeah, I can feel it. Far above here, it can just feel it there. And last night, that is, I was spitting it out,” Razzouk said. I did.
She says she is grateful for the help of the Red Cross.
“It all started at about 10 o’clock last night and arrived in the hotel room by 12 o’clock,” Razzouk said.
Mandy McWherter of the South Carolina Red Cross states that this is one of the many home fires seen at this time of the year. On average, she says the Red Cross responds to six home fires a day in this condition.
“In cold weather, that number tends to increase by about 30%, and unfortunately there is a surge before and after holidays,” McWherter said.
She says Razzok’s house will not be able to live for at least a few days.
“We have classified this as an unconventional property, which means that for some reason the fire department has determined that it is unsafe for families to stay there,” McWherter said.
According to McWherter, cooking is the number one cause of fires, followed by people using additional heating and holiday decorations. She says how to prevent a fire in your home: check smoke alarms every month, pay attention when you are cooking, pay attention to space heaters, and use battery-powered candles Please give me.
How McWherter can help families experiencing a house fire, like Razzouk, Donate to the Red Cross Or by volunteering your time.
