Rare Ride Icon: V20 Toyota Camry

Date:

The Toyota Camry has made great strides since the model debuted in 1980 as a Celica sedan subvariant. The first model on which the Camry became self-sustaining was a very box-shaped four-door that was sold for only four years from 1983. Until 1986. In the North American market, the front drive V10 Camry has replaced the rear drive. Corona As a compact product of Toyota. Also, while the V10 was designed with export markets such as North America in mind, the successor V20 used North American customers as a starting point.

TOYOTA Camry 3577 6By the time the V20 arrived, American consumers expected it to be different from Japanese cars. The V10 Designed during the 1979 oil crisis, it was designed to be as space and fuel efficient as possible, with the utmost care to work better than foam. A few years ahead, Toyota has established itself in North America as a reliable and economical supplier of automobiles. The company wanted to lead a luxury car with the new Camry and appeal to Central America, which is the majority of its customer base. With Honda’s speedy people releasing the 1986 model 3rd Generation (CA) Accord, Toyota also had to outperform major domestic competition.

1998001 1991 Camry 1500x1059Toyota has managed the company’s design group since around 1981 and assigned the V20 design to Seiichi Yamauchi, who wrote the popular MR2. The V20 Camry was more stylish than the V10 and had a much more sophisticated three-box look, even though it consisted mostly of straight lines. The Camry looked similar to the more conservative rear-wheel drive Cressida, which was the company’s only luxury car at the time. Compared to the V10, the V20 is almost 4 inches longer, slightly wider (66.7 inches vs 66.5), and the roof is 0.5 inches lower. The overall look was more American and, as Americans knew, was inevitably not faithful to the typical Japanese car. Quality has improved over its predecessor as Toyota has spent more money on durable materials and improved production.

1998001 1990 Camry 3.4There are three body styles in the world, two of which have arrived in North America. The standard 4-door sedan and its long station wagon brothers were combined by a non-imported 4-door pillar hardtop. The hardtop was limited to the Japanese market and served two purposes. It was an alternative to the Liftback V10, which is no longer available, and also served as the most luxurious version of the Camry. In the domestic market, the luxury Camry was called Vista, and the line included a standard sedan and a much more expensive columnar hardtop. The Vista hardtop was very similar to a standard sedan, but with a completely different body panel. Toyota renamed Vista to Camry Prominent in 1989. Shortly before that, the hardtop was lightly reworked for that failure. Lexus ES250.. The Camry Wagon is not sold in the Japanese market.

1998001 1989 Camry sedan color 1500x941Production of the V20 Camry has expanded significantly compared to its predecessor, which was built solely at the Tsutsumi Plant in Toyota City. A new plant specially built by Toyota for the Camry in Georgetown, Kentucky, has undergone even larger production. The factory saw the first car off line in May 1988 for the 1989 model. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) was the first fully owned Toyota plant in the United States. Other global production includes production in Port Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and China in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province. The Camry was produced and sold as the Shinkai Camry in China through a joint venture. Cars produced in Australia had a Toyota badge, but they were also sold at Holden dealers. It was called Apollo there.

As a result, the Camry was larger in size, but the wheelbase remained the same at 102.4 inches. The suspension design of the car was almost the same from V10 to V20. Both cars used a completely independent setup with coil springs and struts, and front and rear anti-roll bars. The V20’s rear suspension has benefited from the new use of subframes that improve NVH characteristics. This subframe was similar to Toyota’s implementation on the 4th generation Celica in 1986, when the sporty two-door was replaced with a front-wheel drive and new Corona platform. The Camry maintained the front disc and rear drum brake setup, but higher trim cars had disc brakes in every corner.

The 1.8 liter was also the starting point for the V20, but the engine displacement included a 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder 2.0-liter mill, a 2.5-liter V6, and a 2.0-liter in-line 4-turbo diesel. The 2.5 was a star in the lineup (though not a volume cellar), with 24 valves and dual overhead cams. As before, the transmission was 4-speed for automatic and 5-speed for manual. In particular, the entire V20 engine lineup used fuel injection.

1998001 1990 Camry 7.8. 300 1500x1166For the first time in North America, the four-wheel drive Camry has been added to the lineup. Toyota’s original system was called All-Trac, and it was a full-time four-wheel drive system. Only in the Japanese market a while back, this system debuted under the name GT-Four and was offered in the high-performance ST165 generation Celica. It was then offered on several models around the world from 1988 to 2000. The system was impressive from a technical point of view, with a locking center differential in addition to the front and rear differentials. The one in the center was very rare in a standard passenger car. The system was electronically vacuum controlled and the Camry Alltrack version was a direct port from the GT-Four Celica. The All-Trac is only available on 4-cylinder engines and was installed in North American vehicles in 1988.

1998001 1990 Camry color 2The lineup of sedans and wagons in the North American market was divided into (unmarked) base, DX and LE trim, and LE All-Trac was a kind of rare halo model. The largest 2.5-liter V6 arrived in 1988 as an optional extra for LE. When the TMMK came online, the Camry sedans were sourced from Kentucky more than ever, but the V20 wagons were all sourced from Japan. Changes over the years included a light refreshment with the new one-piece bumpers on the front and rear in 1989. The tail lamps have been slightly modified and some interior trim bits have been updated. The ABS option was introduced in 1989, but it was only installed on the LEV6 trim and All-Trac.

In 1990, a rework was done at 2.5 V6, increasing horsepower by 3 to 156. Another visual update was made in February 1990 as the Camry wore Toyota’s new Urban Sombrero logo. In addition to the logo, other updates included a grille trim that matched the color key door handles at all trim levels except the base. With a new interior cloth that is longer than the traditional Toyota Tweed, DX and LE cars wore new wheel cover designs.

TMMK maintained the last manufactured V20, a white LEV6 with a maroon interior, lace alloy and electric seat belts. By that time the Camry name was very well established, and Toyota was ready with its full-front, high-quality soap bar sedan.Benchmark Camry Predefined The medium-sized sedan of quality, reliability and longevity was the XV20.
