Florence, South Carolina (WBTW) — People dressed as Star Wars characters and superheroes at the Power Comic Book Convention at the Florence Center on Saturday said the event was “like a rideless Disneyland.”
“This is a good break from then on, as Gotham can be quite depressing,” said Ron Rothman, who spent the day in a Batman suit. “There are amazing toys like no other, cartoons of all kinds, lots of cosplayers, so you can take pictures with all your favorite heroes from anime, cartoons and TV.”
For many of the tournament cosplayers, wearing their costumes was the result of months of work.
“It may take a year or so,” said Ron Stokes of South Carolina Ghostbusters about his outfit. “It’s very expensive and requires a lot of work and a lot of creativity.”
Mark Todd and Marcelino Patterson fought a lightsaber duel at the tournament. They said the choreography of the fight required constant practice.
“Several times a week,” Patterson said. “We sit a month ahead and decide what we want to do. Then we grab a lightsaber and go to town.”
Cartoonists like Greg Bo Watson also participated. He has attracted well-known franchises such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Watchmen and Harley Quinn. Participating in the tournament could be the best way to get feedback from fans, he said.
“We can communicate with our fans and see what they want and like,” Watson said. “It’s really a symbiotic relationship and it’s a lot of fun.”
The tournament was sponsored by Conway’s Power Comics.
