Planning Commission votes against ExxonMobil plan to truck crude oil

The Santa Barbara County Planning Commission voted against the plan proposed by ExxonMobil to use tank trucks to transport oil along the Central Coast highways.

The project will begin the gradual reopening of ExxonMobil’s offshore oil platform and onshore treatment facility on the southern coast of Santa Barbara County. Trucks are needed to transport crude oil to the Santa Maria and Maricopa refineries. That is, the truck must use the highways 101 and 166.

There are up to 70 truck trips a day, and each truck transports about 160 barrels of crude oil.

On Wednesday, the commissioner voted 3-2 to oppose the project. This was the first day of a two-day hearing about the project. The second hearing scheduled for Friday has been cancelled.

The Planning Committee’s recommendation to reject the project is sent to the Santa Barbara County Supervisory Board, which makes the final decision on the project.
