Peacemaker review: The perfect Suicide Squad chaser

John Cena is unexpectedly vulnerable as a glam metal-loving murder machine peacemaker.

Peacemakers start stalls from the beginning. The opening credits set on the flashy riffs of Norwegian glam metal band Wig Wam’s super catchy Do Ya Wanna Taste It are unexpected and entertaining. But when the first entertainment wears out, you have to ask yourself: will this joke diminish?

Peacemaker is a new series of eight episodes that will premiere tomorrow Thursday, February 13th. HBO Max.. It’s based on the characters of DC Comics, but unlike other superhero shows on TV.In fact, it’s a spin-off from last year’s obscene and ridiculous movie Suicide squad.. Written by the same guy, James Gunn, the show extends the film’s nasty and unrepentant dirty action, with eight episodes of curse, stadium rock, and body horror all incredibly influential character-driven drama. Is involved in.

John Cena replays his role as a peacemaker. Peacemaker is a sly superhero who is devoted to the vague concept of peace and kills those who get in the way. In a Suicide Squad movie, he was scooped up from prison and joined a non-conforming band to fight the alien threat on a remote island. Senna’s performance was one of the highlights. A desperately self-serious peacemaker, unnoticed comically, emerged as a character you love to hate when he makes a vicious betrayal against his peers.

Of the movie Post-credits scene I made fun of the series developed by HBO Max before the movie was released. It’s a bold move, but it has proven to be a solid choice. Gunn and Senna still have a lot of comic energy to give this character even on the small canvas of the episode’s streaming series.

Peacemakers who secretly survive the movie missions are immediately forced into the new Black Ops missions. This time, however, he is on the lawn of his house. We follow the muscle-tied troublemaker, real name Christopher Smith, back to his flag-painted trailer, which even garden ornaments are heavily and patrioticly armed. He drives a striped 70’s muscle car with stars and his best companion is the eagle, but also overwhelmed by the coldness of his father.

The movie-hating peacemaker becomes more like a distant memory as he spends more time with an unpleasant but increasingly vulnerable man under a shiny helmet that he just wants to call Chris. The movie saw him surrounded by super-powerful big guns, and he couldn’t help compensating for the postural competition. However, the TV show combines him with another ensemble cast, but this time it’s a gathering of cast-off agents and nerds in the back room, raising the doubts and fears of superheroes to peacemakers (both shows and characters). Gives you space to explore. Peacemakers face the reality of being a ruthless murder machine, not to mention the complexity of being a man like old-fashioned cook rock in the modern world. But it’s clear that there are lots of colorful insults, slimy body horror, and hurt punch-ups.

Cena is in line with the powerful performance of Orange is the New Black. Danielle Brooks As a new employee who is reluctant and endlessly sympathetic to Black Ops games, and Jennifer Holland As an indignant and bad harcourt. Other highlights include Christopher Heyerdahl When Nhut Le As a strange enemy of gangsters while being a star of Harry Potter and Bridgerton Freddie Stroma In addition, steal the show as a crusade vigilant in ignorant costume (imagine the Punisher was actually Napoleon Dynamite).

The growing bond between this loser band and their personal crisis they are about to change drives most of the show’s interactions. Where the movie was full of big action and spectacular visual effects, the TV show is much smaller. The show takes place in a dusty video store and in an ugly parking lot on the outskirts of a town nowhere else in Central America. The fight is almost deliberately ungraceful, with only a strange rushing camera or slapstick violence to inspire it.

Between battles can feel winding, especially when an episode finds time to hang out with a character, or when involved in yet another debate about pop culture trivia. But even if it’s late, Gunn and Cham know how to jack things up with a timely Cliffhanger. The show’s most emotional subplot has subtly evolved from character development to a compelling storyline where crew behavior awakens new threats.

And those opening credits? After one or two episodes, the joke felt a little thin. But then, after finishing each episode, I started the next episode to see (and listen to) the credits again, seeing where this sad bag squad would go next. Please continue to give us a chance for peace.
