Panama City, FL –
MARIANNA, Fla. (WMBB) – The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, or IFAS, invites farmers to their beef unit approximately every 18 months to learn how to pull the best use of their cattle.
Thursday’s event was the first since March 2019.
There are normally 120 participants for Beef / Forage Day, but this year around 50 producers attended the seminar.
“The biggest problem I see is we’ve had so much rain, the producers are on the ground,” said Nicolas DiLorenzo, beef extension specialist at IFAS. “It’s the first week without rain in a while, so people are behind picking the peanuts and hay.”
IFAS extension specialists at the University of Florida said they were listening to issues farmers face throughout the year.
On Beef / Forage Day, they adapt what they teach to help producers solve their problems.
“We have experienced fluctuations in market prices for livestock so we are constantly trying to find the most efficient way to reduce the cost of inputs and increase the cost of sales,” said Nick Simmons, director of the extension of the county.
Simmons said that this year they’re putting a lot of emphasis on using what you already have on your pasture to feed your cattle.
Dilorenzo said adding protein to forage can help cattle gain a lot of weight.
“We had an average daily gain in corn silage of almost 1.6 lbs. per day, ”said DiLorenzo. “Whereas with the same diet and a little protein, only 10% cottonseed meal for example, the average daily gain for that day could be three. [lbs.]. “
And while the farmers said there were many valuable lessons to be learned from Beef and Forage Day, local farmer Chanley Carter expressed her biggest takeaway.
“You can’t make a profit by feeding a cow with a bucket,” Carter said. “You have to be successful on the pitch. “
