TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Florida (WMBB) – Tyndall Security Force Squadron held a retirement ceremony to recognize those who died in the line of duty.
They also wanted to show their appreciation for those who are still serving.
“We are the first line of defense. We are the first people you see and so to honor and celebrate for a week for the people who walk past us and the people who are here now and our future advocates it is super important that people know what we are doing and why we do what we do,” said honor guard member Bethany Bonilla-Colon.
The base honors service members who have been killed from 2005 to the present day.
One of those honored was a staff sergeant who died last month.
“We recognize Staff Sergeant Bellamy who lost his fight due to mental illness, however, we know his memory will live on and we are very proud of his lineage and the legacy he left. within this squadron among many other law enforcement, special agent and military advocates who have lived this life of sacrifice to protect others,” said 325th Security Squadron Commander Maj. Jordan Criss .
The ceremony included the lowering and folding of the American flag, a 21-gun salute, and tap dancing.
“It lets us know that our call is a little higher than we actually thought,” said Master Sergeant Larue Jackson. “And what we do every day is important rather than just being a job. We do what we are called to do. Not everyone can be a cop, not everyone can defend our country and we have been chosen for it.
The ceremony was just one of many held across the country. The memory of 23,000 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty was honored.
