(StudyFinds.org) – Researchers at the Norwegian University of Technology and Science say a new drug combination shows great promise against COVID-19 in preliminary animal and cell culture tests. The mixture, a combination of nafamostat and Pegasys (IFNα), also meets all requirements for availability and efficacy.

Specifically, this new drug concoction appears to be able to stop SARS-CoV-2 infections before they can take root.

“This combination has indeed removes infection», Says Professor Denis Kainov of the Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (IKOM) of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), in a Press release.

So far, scientists have only tested the drug combo on hamsters and cell cultures. These preliminary results are by no means a confirmation that the mixture will prove to be effective in humans. Still, the researchers say the work so far is a “good sign.”

    Hepatitis Medication For COVID?

Half of the combo, Nafamostat, is already being used as monotherapy against COVID-19 and is currently undergoing a wide range of tests in Japan and other countries. Meanwhile, Pegasys (IFNα) is primarily a treatment for Hepatitis C.

“Both drugs attack a factor in our cells called TMPRSS2, which plays an essential role in viral replication,” says Magnar Bjørås, professor in the Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine.

Better yet, low doses of the drug combination are all it takes to produce the desired protective effect.

“Low doses of combination drugs can have several clinical benefits, including fewer adverse events and better patient outcomes,” notes Aleksandr Ianevski, doctoral researcher affiliated with the Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine.

In summary, the study authors are optimistic that this new drug combination could soon save lives and improve the overall quality of life of patients. COVID-19 patients. Regarding the cost, Nafamostat is relatively inexpensive, while Pegasys (IFNα) is a bit more expensive.

The to study is published in the journal Virus.
