BONIFAY (The Holmes County Advertiser) – A vehicle crash on Interstate 10 turned into something other than expected Tuesday for Bonifay Fire Chief Larry Cook.
BFR was called to the scene of an accident at kilometer 107, on arrival the vehicle was completely involved in the fire. Cook said there was no one inside.
“When we got to the scene we saw the vehicle but there was no one inside,” Cook said. “I knew there must be someone around, so I did a perimeter search. ”
It was then that Cook saw a man sitting near the fence. When Cook approached the man, he asked, “Are you okay? Do you need help?”
Cook says that was when things went wrong.
“I asked the man if he needed any help,” Cook said. “He looked at me and said, ‘I’m going to kill you.’ ”
According to Cook, the man had his hand behind his back and pulled out what he initially thought was a gun, but it turned out to be a small tire iron to hand. At that point he took a hit and hit Cook in the knee.
Cook called for help from the Florida Highway Patrol and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, who were also at the scene.
“I turned to call for help and they were there,” Cook said. “They saw what happened and were able to stop the man after a fight.”
In a press release, the Florida Highway Patrol said the man was the driver of the vehicle and appeared to have set on fire after the crash. He is charged with aggravated assault and battery on a law enforcement officer.
