Panama City, FL – Hillside Cemetery dealing with caskets coming out of the ground after heavy rain

Panama City, FL –

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) – Local leaders face the aftermath of yesterday’s flooding after several coffins floated out of their vaults at Callaway Cemetery and Hillside Cemetery.

Community activist Tony Bostick went to check on Hillside after hearing reports that Thursday’s flooding had removed several graves from the ground.

Bostick said he thinks overpopulation is contributing to the problem.

“One of the biggest issues here is with this amount of rain, and you don’t have the correct grave spacing here because it’s overcrowded,” Bostick said.

However, Panama City officials said overcrowding was not the problem.

“It has to do with the rain and there is nothing – in other words you have a certain amount of rain and you have to go back and deal with it and fix it but it has nothing to do with it. with the people of the cemetery, ”said Panama City Mayor Greg Brudnicki.

Brudnicki said the cemetery is private property. As for moving the coffins from their plot, cleaning them and re-burying them, he said it was against the law for the city to do so.

“Without having permission from a family, you can’t just lift a coffin out of the ground,” Brudnicki said. “You have to know the rules and the laws and therefore some of the rumors that have been spread are just plain wrong.”

Local funeral director Russell Wright Sr. has said that coffins popping out of the ground as a result of heavy rains are a natural occurrence and there is no way to fully prepare for them.

“It’s not just related to Panama City, it’s happening all over the state of Florida,” Wright said. “So we are very sensitive to the situation, we are very concerned and as I said at the moment, we are working to rectify the problem.”

Wright insists the issue is taken care of and that other funeral directors whose safes are affected will work together to resolve the issue with respect.
