Oregon-born gray wolf dies after ‘epic’ California trek

A gray wolf born in Oregon was excited when a biologist traveled far south to California, but was apparently found dead after being hit by a vehicle.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) reports that truck drivers have found dead bodies near the town of Rebec, 75 miles northwest of Los Angeles, on November 10.

The radio tracking collar identified it as Wolf OR93.

Autopsy found an injury consistent with the vehicle’s strike.

OR93 was born in 2019 in White Riverpack, northern Oregon, and entered California earlier this year.

His radio color last signaled in San Luis Obispo County on April 5th. However, recently in October, CDFW officials said the wolf is believed to have been found in Ventura County.

Gray wolves are listed as endangered in California.

According to the ministry, the last wolf was captured in 1922, far south of the state.
