Recent studies have shown that optimizing drugs for patients with high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease living in East London can reduce lifelong hospital costs and prevent cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes.

In this study, funded by Barts Charity, researchers evaluated the gap between blood pressure and cholesterol-lowering statin treatment in patients diagnosed with. High blood pressure Or cardiovascular disease.

A team of researchers from Queen Mary’s Wolfson Institute for Population and Health and William Harvey Institute surveyed more than a million people living in East London in 2019 to understand the treatment gap. Their findings show that 27% of patients with hypertension and 38% of patients with cardiovascular disease are not currently receiving optimal treatment for their condition.

Next, researchers developed a model that predicts avoidable cardiovascular events, years and quality-adjusted life years, and medical cost savings with optimized treatment. This result suggests that complete optimization of blood pressure and cholesterol-lowering drugs in 5 years can prevent about 1000 heart attacks, strokes, or associated deaths from hypertension and cardiovascular disease. .. And with full optimization for the patient’s life, hospital costs can be saved by over £ 50m.

Researchers suggest that even a small 10% improvement in medical optimization can have a significant impact on this patient population.

Dr. Runguo Wu, Health Economist and Lead Author of the Study at the Wolfson Institute for Population and Health in Queen Mary, said:

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and hypertension and high cholesterol are two important risk factors.

This study used data from more than 100 primary care practices from the clinical commissioning groups of City and Hackney, Newham, and Tower Hamlets. Local governments covered by these NHS services are included in 10% of England’s most socially disadvantaged regions, with a diverse population of large South Asian and black ethnic groups in the United Kingdom, Africa and the Caribbean.
