Some of the closest people to Norm Macdonald I didn’t know that comedians had been fighting cancer for 10 years … so a surprising sudden loss hit them as much as fans.
We welcomed the announcer and producer of “The Tonight Show” Steve Higgins In New York City, I asked him how he was dealing with Nome’s death. They worked very closely … Steve was an “SNL” writer when Nome was a Starcast member.
Steve says they were really close outside of work, and he’s taking Norm death Difficult … because he didn’t have a clue that his friend was diagnosed many years ago.
He also used a vibrant and perfect metaphor to explain exactly why everyone in the comedy community loved gnomes.
Steve recalls spending a lot of time with Nome during the “SNL” era … Nome said at the timing of his comedy “it was really great.”
It’s an emotional conversation, and Steve told us … Norm was very keen on doing comedy in his way, which probably sacrificed him superstar-level success. But he adds that his friend had no problems with the trade-off.
