NS. Louis (KMOV.com) — When the Cardinals punch the post-season ticket and some games remain on the regular season schedule, who will give the ball to St. Louis in the wild card game on October 6th? There was no question as to whether to bring it. ..
It was inevitable that Cardinals manager Mike Shildt shared with Brewers that Adam Wainwright would start on Wednesday prior to the club’s series finale on Thursday morning.
The announcement was just procedural, given what the 40-year-old veteran starter did in St. Louis this season.
Wainwright was Cardinals’ most trusted starting pitcher this season. No one on the team is approaching Wayne Wright’s workload in rotation. His 32 starts lead the club, and Kim Kwang-hyun is ranked second with only 21 starts.
But beyond his consistent availability, Wayne Wright had the effect of navigating this season as the unquestionable leader of the pitching staff. Wainwright does not rely on name recognition to bet his claim as one of the best pitchers in the game in 2021. His performance tells the whole story.
In his 17 seasons with the Cardinals, Wainwright set a 17-7 record at 3.05 ERA. He edited the 206.1 innings and is just behind Zack Wheeler throughout MLB. Wayne Wright’s three complete games this season have tied him to the league lead. He made a few more close calls and scored five more starts with more than eight innings.
It is no exaggeration to say that the Cardinal would not reach here without Wayne Wright. During the June plunge, when the Cardinals struggled to find a quality start from a pitcher other than Wainwright, the Cardinals went 9-17 to drop the team to fourth place in the NL Central rankings. It would have been much worse without Wayne Wright’s stable presence every five days, as the month was as bad as it was for St. Louis. Wainwright went 3-1 in June with a 2.45 ERA, and the Cardinals won four of the five starts.
The “stopper” was cutting out his work for him at the time. But now Cardinals is benefiting from the stability provided by Jon Lester and JA Happ, which are acquisitions with deadlines. Miles Mikolas has recovered from the injury and is beginning to look like his vintage self. Jack Flaherty and Dakota Hudson, both of whom are returning to their respective Major League Baseball games.
The Cardinals pitching depth is a bright spot and is now a major factor in the incredible 17-game streak that jumped St. Louis to the post-season berth. With all that in mind, no pitcher wants to decide the season in a Cardinals win-loss scenario. After throwing six innings with a wildcard clincher on Tuesday, Wainwright has recovered and has plenty of time to prepare for a date with the Dodgers or Giants next Wednesday.
Cardinals is rotating for the final series of the regular season, with Dakota Hudson, Jon Lester and Jake Woodford as starters. We believe Leicester’s Saturday outing is an adjustment for the potential start of NLDS in Game 1.
