The day before the robbery, Valentine rented a car in Omaha, Nebraska and drove to Sioux Falls, South Dakota with his accomplice. When they robbed the bank, each wore a mask covering their face. Valentine was armed with a pistol and demanded that bank employees hand over the money to the cashier’s drawer and vault. Both robbers left the bank before the police arrived.

On November 24, 2017, Valentine robbed the same bank again, but had no partners. He wore the same mask and once again ordered him to use a firearm to obey the bank clerk. He grabbed the money from the safe and ran away.

After the second robbery, a DNA match led to Valentine’s partner leading to the first bank robbery and then to accusations against Valentine.

The total amount of money taken from bank robbers reached about $ 278,000. The first National Bank deposits were insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

The case was investigated by the Sioux Falls Police Department, the South Dakota Criminal Investigation Bureau, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant federal prosecutors Jeremy R. Jehangiri and Jeffrey C. Clapper have charged the case.

Valentine was immediately placed under the control of the United States Marshals Service.
