Nathan Chen Makes Statement in Record Short Program for Americans | Figure Skating

Date:

Apparently back in his game, Nathan Chen set a short program record at the US Figure Skating Championships on Saturday.

With great footwork and spin-filled performance – oh yeah, and there were also two giant quadriceps – Chen sent a message to all domestic and international competitors. His 115.39 points exceeded the 114.13 national mark set in 2020.

For Vincent Zhou, it was too high on the ice and on the judges’ scoresheets. Chen’s main competition here was great, but he looked relaxed and confident throughout the program when he nailed the same Quad Lutz-Triple Toe Loop he did with a score of 112.78. ..

Iria Marine Inn, 17, was ahead of veteran Jason Brown (103.46 to 100.84) in third place on most men’s fields with stunning skating displays.

“That is, it’s amazing to have such a strong US competitor, especially for the Olympic season,” Chen said. “No matter who goes, there is a really strong team there. But you focus on yourself, I have no control over anything else.”

Given that he has won 14 consecutive victories since the 2018 Olympics, Chen’s fight at Skate America in October was amazing. His quick return to the top began a week later with a victory at Skate Canada, and Saturday was as good as ever.

22-year-old Chen and two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu will be favorites for the Beijing Olympics. No one has won the Olympic gold medal three times in a row in the early modern period. Chen hasn’t lost to Hanyu since Pyeongchang, where the short program blunder destined for Chen’s chances. Hanyu recently beat the Japanese, but his short program score was more than four points lower than Saturday’s Chen’s score.

21-year-old Zhou has been on a roller coaster in his senior career. This is highlighted by the 2019 world bronze medal, the three US silver medals behind Chen, and the Skate America victory earlier this year.

Last March, he fell apart in a short program at the World Championships and wasn’t even qualified for free skating. Therefore, he had to attend the Nebelhorn Trophy to secure a place for the third men’s Olympics in the United States. In the clutch performance, he won.

Now Zhou seems destined for his second Olympics. He is sixth in Korea and one behind Chen.

Marinen, who is gaining momentum in the US scene after a strong junior rank last season, is called “Quad God” by fans. He certainly responded to that claim with a quad-filled program and some dynamic spins.

“My reaction was amazing to see it,” Marinein said of his score.Come to think of it, you can achieve anything with time and effort.

27-year-old Brown represented the United States at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and won a bronze medal at a free-skating team event. He was beaten at the 2018 Olympics, but once again demonstrated his sustainability in Saturday’s short program.

Given this week’s snowstorms and frigid temperatures, getting to Nashville would have been more logistically difficult for Brown than performance.

“After a 33-hour trip, 5 flights canceled, 4 airline changes, 3 airports, 2 countries, 1 night in Atlanta, car rental, and lots of help … we officially arrived in Nashville. ! ”He posted on social media.

He then put out a powerful, fluid, high-speed routine that put the crowd at his feet long before Brown’s prosperity, and then sat on the ice and soaked in cheers.

Still, it couldn’t match Marinenin’s quadriceps, but Brown’s 100.84 points put him in fourth place. Anyway, there is always a smile on his face.

“For me, it was the only thing I knew was a reaction of the crowd. It was great to see them all at their feet,” he said. “And the score went up. But for me, that’s what you can do at that moment, put your best foot forward and skate your skates. I can only win in my game not.”
