Nashville, Tennessee (WKRN) – On April 29, the Nashville Zoo welcomed Madagascar’s native carnivorous animal, perhaps an unheard-of animal, baby-spotted fanaloca.

They are adorable and only grow to the size of a small cat.

“These people weigh only about 2 kilograms as adults,” said Dr. Heather Schwartz, a veterinarian at the Nashville Zoo. “He won’t grow that big.”

Dr. Schwartz said he hopes this beginner will be an ambassador of his species.

“He actually joins our behavioral couple department, goes out and meets guests along the way, attends shows and programs,” Dr. Schwartz said.

According to the AZA database, he is the first animal born in the Nashville Zoo and the United States.

The zoo said his mother was unfriendly and did not care. Due to his health concerns, the cub was pulled to be raised by hand at the HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center.

Veterinary staff work 24 hours a day to hydrate and bottle turnips. Since then, he has gained weight, is bright, careful and lively.

“He responded very well to the formula we chose for him, which is very similar to the formula for kittens,” Dr. Schwartz explained. “I fine-tuned my feeding schedule and it finally worked.”

The zoo is proud to be able to grow this fanaloca to protect his vulnerable species.

“We love to join with many different animals that many zoos don’t have,” said Dr. Schwartz. “Raise awareness of species that no one knew a few weeks ago.”

This young puppy stays in the veterinary center until about 8-9 weeks of age. Then go to the Education Center and a team of action husbands where zoo visitors can come to see him while on the go.

News 2 has partnered with the Nashville Zoo to offer a weekly segment of Zoopalooza. You can see them on Saturday’s Good Morning Nashville News 2 and here at WKRN.com.
