Holly County, South Carolina (WBTW) — Some Vietnamese veterans faced the effects of exposure to Agent Orange during the war were recognized in Socastee on Wednesday.
All the veterans who spoke to News13 repeated the same feelings. They are very grateful for their awareness of their services while exposed to harmful chemicals, and their scars may not be visible, but they are very realistic and affect them every day. Give.
Veterans shared breakfast and awards from the Orange Heart Medal Foundation for their service in Vietnam and their exposure to defoliants used by the US military.
“This chemical they sprayed did a lot of work, but it did a lot of work for us,” said Bobby Tiner, director of the Orange Heart Medal Foundation.
“It’s a warrior who was injured without showing any signs,” said Roddy Lewis, a Vietnamese veteran who won the Orange Heart Medal.
The medal is given to veterans who show any of the 17 symptoms of exposure to Agent Orange.
“It’s a group that no one wants or doesn’t want to join,” Lewis said. “It happened while we were serving our country.”
“It wasn’t very well known at first, but now it’s appreciated because they recognize us,” said another medal winner, Marion Chestnut.
To date, more than 7,300 medals have been awarded nationwide, and approximately 500 medals have been awarded to South Carolina veterans.

“It feels hard to explain,” he said. “But it’s a beautiful feeling that we work and raise awareness.”
Veterans take pride in wearing medals and also use them as educational tools.
Keith Pickel Shimmer, who received the medal, said, “It will be part of the conversation to tell people what this is and what it is for and to let people know about Agent Orange.”
