Mikaela Shiffrin remains the leader in the entire World Cup, despite her first DNF in four years.Skiing

Just a month before the Beijing Olympics, Petra Vlhov won his fifth victory in six races on Sunday, consolidating his position as a female slalom skier this season.

The Slovak World Cup overall champion won the penultimate slalom before the tournament as Switzerland’s first leader Wendy Holdener denied victory in his first career.

Mikaela Shiffrin was third after the opening run, but skated on a blazingly fast second run until the Americans straddled the gate.

It was the first time in almost four years that Schifflin was unable to finish the slalom. In January 2018, she skied in the last slalom before the Pyeongchang Olympics in her second race in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

Schifflin defeated Burhova to win a home race in Killington, Vermont in November, but all other slalom this season went on the path of Slovakia.

“I’m always the best and I’m trying to be the fastest in the race, especially the second run,” said Bruhova.

Dragging Holdener by a second, Bruhova recorded the fastest second runtime to put pressure on the Swiss leader as the last starter.

Holdener raced in his 100th career slalom, maintaining his lead in the first half, but eventually finishing 0.23 behind Bruhova. Sweden’s Anna Sven Larson was 1.06 behind in third place.

Swen Larson returned to the podium for the first time in nearly two years after sitting down with a knee injury last season.

“Last season was a long way from injury,” said Swen Larson. “I’m very happy, it’s incredible. I’m proud to be back.”

After criticizing the course conditions after a series of snowfalls at a Slovenian resort, Bruhova called the race a “big battle.”

“I was a little angry this morning because when I saw the conditions they weren’t as perfect as the World Cup races,” Bruhova said.

“In the second run, I did everything perfectly. After all, it’s another victory, so my team, I’m happy because they do everything for me to be in perfect condition. . “

It was Slovakia’s 25th career victory. She leads the discipline ranking with a large ranking of 240 points from the runner-up Sifflin. However, the Americans outperformed Bruhova by 35 points and maintained their overall lead.

World Cup and World Slalom Champion Austrian Katharina Liensberger also straddled the gate on her second run.

The result meant yet another broken heart for Holdener.

Swiss skiers won 29 slalom podiums without winning the race. In the history of the World Cup, no other skier, female or male, has won the top three without winning in one area.

“I skied really well. I made too many mistakes, but I’m happy because I aimed for it,” said Holdener. “I think I gave myself a chance to win. That’s why I’m happy.”

Her Swiss teammate Michelle Gisin skied across the third gate early in the first run.

Last season, Gishin became the first Swiss skier to win a female slalom in almost 19 years. Since January 2017, Gishin and Rinsberger are the only skiers who have won slaloms other than Schifflin and Bruhova.

Schifflin’s second exit left Paula Morzan as the top finisher for the 13th-placed US ski team. Suffering from a broken wrist, Morzan skis with a pole taped to his left glove. She also resisted knee pain after crashing on Saturday’s Giant Slalom on the same hill.

Due to lack of snow, spectators could not enter the event moved from another Slovenian resort, Maribor.

The next race is a night slalom in Schladming, Austria, on Tuesday, an event relocated from Flahau, which was hit by a recent increase in coronavirus infections.
