Microsoft has released Windows 11, do I need to upgrade?

    # 1: Go getter. Excited to see what Santa Satya and his hilarious elf have brought, you break that update button faster than the Whac-A-Mole Champion.

    # 2: Put-It-Off-er. Sometimes we postpone it for years until we find it safe to change this monumental life, like a trip to a DMV. (Looking at you Windows 7 holdout!).

With Windows 11 released on Tuesday, it’s a good idea to postpone it for at least a few months. At launch, the latest version of Microsoft feels more like Windows 10.5 than what the company promised. Big announcement in June.. Also, if you are using an older PC, you may not be eligible for the upgrade or may need to upgrade.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a fan of visual makeovers and new productivity tricks, but I can’t find the most exciting features anywhere, such as Android app support, third-party widgets, and universal mute controls.Besides, I came to the conclusion that Windows 11 is about most

And that hardware partner is selling more computers, rather than giving new debt to current computers.

In fact, Windows 11 has higher minimum hardware requirements than Windows 10. You can download it. Microsoft PC Health Check App Check if your machine is selected for the team. Testing Windows 11 on three laptops from different years gave predictable results. The 2019DellXPS 13 was slow and the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 of the same age worked fine, with some tweaks. And brand new Surface Laptop Studio over $ 1,600 The one created for Windows 11 worked the same as the one created for Windows 11.

Ultimately, we expect Windows 11 like Windows 10 to be great for all users, but for now, even if you qualify for an upgrade, you still need to consider potential out-of-the-gate issues. I have. I planned my experience with new features to help you decide.

Windows 11 is packed with new features, including a new centralized Start menu and the Microsoft Store with Android apps. In an exclusive interview, WSJ’s Joanna Stern talked to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella about software, the impact of a pandemic, and his strategy to compete with Google and Apple. Central redesign

Think of Windows 11 as your favorite restaurant after the remodeling. It has a new paint coat, a redesigned bar (ie the taskbar), a nifty new polished table, and a new shiny silverware. But the food you love remains the same. Everything from icons to menus has a modern look, but you may also see pop-up menus and settings menus that may not have been touched since George W. Bush was at the White House.

From time to time, you may come across an unupdated part of Windows 11.

What is the biggest aesthetic difference? The start button and other taskbar icons have moved to the bottom center. People from MacOS or ChromeOS may enjoy this, but don’t be afraid. Die Hard in the left corner: You can easily undo it in the settings menu on the taskbar. Thankfully, you can also remove the new preset taskbar icon (uh, Microsoft Teams chat). You can continue to pin your favorite apps. If you add more,[スタート]The button will scoot to the left.

    Increased productivity

Of the window[最大化]When you hover over the button, you can use the operating system to arrange windows and other open windows in different layouts.

Snap layout, my absolute favorite feature, makes it easy to place multiple windows on the screen. Hover over the maximize button to see different window layouts based on screen size and orientation (two side by side, four grids, and so on). When you click the option, the tool will place the current window in one place. Suggests where other open windows should go.

Immediately hit users of external monitors: Windows 11 remembers which window was where. Unplugging your monitor minimizes everything rather than stacking it on the rest of the screen. Also, reconnecting will return each window to the proper location.

The first release of Windows 11 does not yet have one of Microsoft’s most advertised features, the Universal Mute Button. This will stop everyone’s favorite “Mute button not found” game and allow you to mute the microphone at the system level. Microsoft said it plans to add this feature at a later date.

    Some widgets

A new widget icon on the taskbar launches this interface.

I’ve long called widgets “lazy apps”. Instead of opening an app or searching the heavenly banned internet, widgets are always there and provide information at a glance. They can be great. However, this is not the case here.

There are classics like weather and stocks, but I wanted something that was associated with frequently used apps like Spotify and Spotify.

    twitter..

Microsoft said it plans to publish the widget to third parties at a later date. Also, Microsoft’s current options are half-baked. What I tried, including OneDrive, went to the website instead of the app. And despite the customization options, the news recommendations are very off. (Perhaps some versions of me want to read about pandas being too lazy to have sex.)

    Promising app store

The TikTok app in the Microsoft Store is really just a website.

For Microsoft, the new store is more than a place to get apps. In June, CEO Satya Nadella positioned her store as an open market.

    Apple

And Google. Unlike them, it is published to the web app and is not reduced if the app uses its own payment system. It also hosts third-party app stores.

    Amazon‘NS

Android App store and Epic Games Store Will be the first..

The new store makes searching for apps much easier and improved. Still, it’s a confusing place. For example, I downloaded TikTok because I noticed that it was the TikTok website and it was in its own window. Unless you count angry reviews, there are no notes to explain it in the store. I’ve come across a situation where this is just a website in other apps like Instagram and Reddit.

According to Microsoft, Android apps will appear in Windows 11 in the coming months. You’ll see clear labels for the different app types so you know what you’re downloading.

    Some hiccups

When the story of my laptop test came to light, the results with Windows 11 were mixed on three PCs. The Dell XPS 13 felt slow despite the 10th generation

    Intel

Processor and 8GB of RAM. When I closed Slack, which was hungry and eating RAM like a hungry hippopotamus, my computer wasn’t as energetic as Windows 10. If your old computer is running smoothly on Windows 10, you might rethink your upgrade. ..

Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio has its own screen that you can tilt forward and then fold over your keyboard.

    Photo:

    Microsoft

I had a much better experience with a Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 with similar specifications. Everything was snappy, except for the mic and speaker settings, and most of mine was right where I left it. With both this and Dell, the audio didn’t work until I tinkered with it.

When Surface Laptop Studio entered my life, I understood much better how Microsoft wanted Windows 11 to feel. Equipped with 11th generation quad-core Core i7 processor,

    Nvidia

With graphics and 32GB of RAM, the $ 2,700 test machine behaves like a rambo on freshly paved roads. Everything is compressed along a 14.4 inch, 120Hz touch screen and can be folded over a keyboard into a tablet. What are the biggest drawbacks? The machine is a bit clunky to carry.

That’s really my takeaway: Windows 11 works well with crazy new laptops and promoting them seems to be Microsoft’s central goal.Pandemic Put people on their PC Longer than ever. Is there a better way to free people from older machines than using a flashy new operating system for flashy new hardware?

“We want people to be able to make choices on their computing journey. That’s why Windows 10 is here today and Windows 11 is moving you forward with the technology you need now,” says Microsoft’s premier product. The chief, Panos Panay, told me that he told his 89-year-old father to press the refresh button. On his Windows PC as soon as it appeared.

It’s one user who doesn’t regret his decision — especially because his son is in charge of Windows. But for everyone else using a Windows 11-eligible machine, Put-It-Off-er will at least solve the problem and allow you to explore all the promised features. It would be better to have one.
