Mariposa toddler orphaned after losing only remaining parent in crash – Fresno, California

Fresno, California 2021-12-30 02:27:36 –

Fresno, CA (KFSN)-What was supposed to be a fun day in the snow turned out to be a tragedy for Mariposa’s toddlers.

After his mother died at the end of last year, his only surviving parent died in a car accident near Oakhurst the day after Christmas. Two-year-old Drew Trujillo is currently isolated.

“He was a good dad,” said Andrew Trujillo’s brother, Anthony. “He was a really good dad. He loved Drew.”

The father and son shared more than just a name, but the tragedy they overcame strengthened the bond.

“Andrew had a lot of negative reasons,” his brother said. “He was a really positive person.”

In the fall of 2020, Andrew’s wife and Drew’s mother died during pregnancy of a baby girl who couldn’t survive. Since the serious loss, Andrew’s family has said he has endeavored to be the best parent he can for Drew.

The two often went out and made memories together.

That’s what they were doing on Sunday. Andrew’s girlfriend and her children spent the day in the snow. But a drive home will change Drew’s life forever.

“I honestly couldn’t believe it at first,” Anthony said. “I couldn’t believe it.”

His family believes that the snow and ice on the road caused Andrew to crash into a tree on Highway 41 near Oakhurst. Andrew was a local paramedic and it was his own colleague who responded to the crash site.

Andrew did not survive. Little Drew is currently left without parents.

“He continues to talk honestly about the accident,” said Andrew’s sister and Drew’s aunt Evangelica Taylor.

Since then, the Trujillo family has been overwhelmed by the generosity of those who want to hear and help the boy.

A GoFundMe Since then, it has raised nearly $ 70,000 for the boy’s future and his father’s funeral expenses.

Andrew’s boss, Edward Guzman, said, “I really want my father to be proud not only of what Drew did as an emergency medical worker, but also as a caring person.”

Sierra Ambulance is currently collecting photos of Andrew at work to give his son a glimpse of his father’s man.

“So, as Drew gets older, he can see what this dad did, at least at work,” Guzman said. “And I’m proud of the work he did. He made a difference in the lives of many.”

Drew’s family wants him to do the same.

“I never want his tragedy to hurt him,” Taylor said. “I want him to grow up in the love of Christ and feel the love from us.”

Drew is currently taking care of his grandparents, who are said to be like the second parents of a toddler.

Caltrans urges drivers to avoid non-essential mountain trips until weather conditions improve, hoping to prevent other tragedy.
